jack elway

Jack Elway, son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, has committed to Arizona State, the Rocky Mountain News reported Saturday.

Jack Elway, a senior at Cherry Creek High (Englewood, Colo.), visited campus last weekend, the report said. He has completed 112 of 197 passes for 1,677 yards, 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions this season.
Arizona State is currently 7-0 and ranked No. 8 in the BCS standings. The Sun Devils were off this week.

Jack Elway is extending the family ties to the Pac-10. John Elway was an All-American at Stanford and grandfather Jack, Sr. coached at Stanford.
Arizona State running back Ryan Torain exchanged a crutch for a pitchfork. The pitchfork was ceremonial, a celebration of ASU's runaway victory over Washington. But what Torain did with it wasn't.

Torain buried it deep in Sun Devil Stadium turf, almost as if he were trying to bury that crutch.

Torain suffered a sprain to his left foot in the first quarter of Saturday night's 44-20 ASU victory over the Huskies.

"Somebody stepped on (my foot)," said Torain, who took the pitchfork at the urging of his sensational backup, Keegan Herring, and slammed it into the turf in front a of roaring student section.

The foot was encased in a boot. But Torain said he believed he would be ready for the home game on Oct. 27 against California.

But ASU coach Dennis Erickson wasn't so sure. Erickson feared that Torain's injury was "pretty" serious.

"I don't know if he'll be back or not," Erickson said of Torain's chances of playing against Cal.

ASU receiver Mike Jones also was sidelined after suffering a concussion in the first quarter. However, Erickson said he thought Jones would be ready for Cal.

Even with the injuries to Torain and Jones, the Sun Devils scored 44 points - 31 in the second half - on a night when they were without tight end Brent Miller, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday.

Elway visits
Jack Elway, accompanied by his Pro Football Hall of Fame father, John, attended the game Saturday night along with several other players the Sun Devils are recruiting.

Erickson was offensive coordinator for the late Jack Elway Sr., John's father, at San Jose State from 1979-81.

The younger Jack Elway, 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback, made his recruiting trip here after his Cherry Creek High School (Colo.) team dropped a 37-34 nationally televised game to Grandview (Colo.) on Friday night.

Stanford, Oregon, Louisiana State and Colorado are among the schools recruiting him.
