LOS ANGELES (AP) -- His dad's hoop dreams ended with a couple of failed tryouts with NBA teams in the 1990's. Now it's possible that Lil' Romeo will be able to achieve his dream of playing basketball through the college route.

The teenage hip-hop star is on his way to the University of Southern California. He signed a national letter of intent to attend USC at a news conference Monday at a hotel near Beverly Hills. Lil' Romeo, who's actual name is Percy Romeo Miller, is now a senior guard at Beverly Hills High, averaging 13.9 points and 5.6 assists last season.

He calls the scholarship deal "the most important thing" he's ever had to do. He says he hopes kids will learn from him that "education is more important than money." One recruiting service ranks Miller, a 6-0, 170-pounder, among the top 15 prep point guards in the country.

Miller's father, Master P (who's real name is Percy Miller), had a couple of tryouts for NBA teams, but never made the squads.

Percy Romeo Miller, Jr (born August 19, 1989) better known by his stage name Romeo (formerly Lil' Romeo), is an American rapper, actor, and basketball player. He is the son of rapper, producer and entertainment mogul Master P and nephew of C-Murder and Silkk the Shocker. He records southern rap hip-hop music on his father's Guttar Music label. He has so far released three studio albums and two compilation albums. His fifth album God's Gift was released on December 12, 2006. He has also been awarded a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Southern California, starting with the 2008-2009 season[1].[2]

Before all of his success Romeo always had a gift for rapping even at the young age of 4. His father Master P mentioned that he left him home to play with his cousins one day and came home and his son told him he wrote a rap song all by himself. Also before Romeo became famous he was featured in some of Master P's early records. At the age of 11, Lil Romeo followed in his father Master P's footsteps and became a rapper. As rumored, Romeo's father, Master P, wrote all of Romeo's earlier rhymes. Now parody group Broken Equipment Productions ghost write for Romeo. They were quoted in Source Magazine saying "When we write Romeo's lyrics, we don't think at all. We just go in the booth and rap whatever we think at that very second. If we think of flowers and cotton candy then we write that down and give it to Romeo. It's better we do it because Romeo never writes raps." He beat Michael Jackson's record of the youngest person to get a number one with his first single "My Baby". His success came from his two early studio albums, mainly Game Time. He mentioned that he did the album all by himself, at his home studio, which was shown on the show MTV Cribs. Lil Romeo released a third album called Romeoland, with guest appearances from Nick Cannon, Master P, and his new group, the Rich Boyz, but this didn't get as much attention as his previous two. He released two more unnoticed albums, Lottery and God's Gift in 2006.

Romeo opened a new recording label named Guttar Music. Romeo also appeared on most of his father's greatest hits, such as "I Need Dubs". He is in a rap group with his cousins and younger brother, Young V called "Rich Boyz". So far the Rich Boyz have released one studio album but the group appeared on most of the tracks on God's Gift. Since then, Romeo has been working on his new album, Gumbo Station. This will be his first studio album for three years and his first studio album to use the name Romeo. He mentioned on his myspace page that this is going to be his best album yet. Guests will include Master P and the Guttar Music Family and production by Dr Dre. After the album has been released in 2007, Romeo will be concentrating more on his basketball than his music.

Romeo launched a new record label with his father Master P. The record label aims to release music without any explicit content, due to the fact that Master P and Romeo have agreed to stop explicit language in their music. Lil Romeo and his girlfriend Latavia who are engaged and plan to get married on an unknown date. Lil Romeo also has a child by her best friend, who name is unknown.

He was recently invited in summer 2006 to the Reebok-sponsored ABCD, considered the premier basketball camp in the United States. The Teaneck, New Jersey-based ABCD camp is an invitation-only basketball showcase that has produced a host of high-profile players, including Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Stephon Marbury, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James.

On April 13, 2007, Miller verbally committed to the University of Southern California (USC) and signed a letter of intent on November 19, 2007. Miller, a 6'0" point guard at Beverly Hills High School, averaged 13.9 points and 5.6 assists per game during the 2006-2007 high school season.[3] He will be joined by fellow commit and good friend Demar DeRozan, who is a recruit from Compton High School; both were coached by Miller's father Master P during the spring and summer months. On November 19th, 2007, Miller and DeRozan both signed national letters of intent to attend USC.

Shahad has created P. Miller Shoes. Recently he stated that he has another line out, Gumbo Station mentioned on "Special Girl"[4] and also Passion Jeans. This line also features his "Cookie Monster" gear.

Romeo is the CEO of the clothing line. He also admits he has a clothing line from his latest single "Special Girl".[5] In photo shoots, Romeo would wear clothes from his clothing line. Recently, he has been sporting clothes from the line. "P. Miller Shoes" are always on sale at Master P's MySpace.

During Romeo's 3rd album Romeoland, Romeo introduced his own rap group called the Rich Boyz. The members of the group include Romeo's cousins and his younger brother Young V. So far, the group has released one album Young Ballers: The Hood Been Good To Us and has appeared in most of Romeo's tracks such as "U Can't Shine Like Me". They have also been in most of Romeos videos as far back as "2way" and "Thats Kool". It has been reported that in 2008 there will be a second album from them.

Kevin Love scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, helping second-ranked UCLA overcome a sloppy first half in a 71-59 victory over Maryland Monday night in the semifinals of the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo.

UCLA (4-0) had just eight scholarship players in uniform because of injuries to several key players, and it showed early with numerous turnovers and bad shots. But the Bruins, led by Love's crisp passing against Maryland's press, settled down.

UCLA will play Michigan State in the championship game tonight. Greivis Vasquez had 18 points for Maryland (3-1).

Louisville's Padgett may miss rest of the season

Louisville center David Padgett has a fractured right knee cap that will cause him to miss at least 10 weeks - possibly the rest of the season.

"David Padgett's (college) career is probably coming to an end," coach Rick Pitino said during a news conference Monday. "We're all devastated for David and for the team."

The fifth-year senior banged the knee in practice last week, Pitino said, and hit it again as he tried to draw a charging foul during No. 6 Louisville's 84-53 win over Jackson State on Sunday. Pitino initially said the injury appeared to be a bruise.

Padgett averaged 9.5 points and 5.6 rebounds last season.

Lakers' Brown out indefinitely

Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown will be sidelined indefinitely with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Lakers spokesman John Black said an MRI on Monday revealed the extent of the injury.

Brown was hurt early in the Lakers' win over Chicago on Sunday. He was averaging 4.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in his first six games this season.

Hornets' Paul misses 2nd game

Chris Paul missed his second straight game with a sprained right ankle when the New Orleans Hornets hosted the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

Jannero Pargo started in Paul's place, and veteran Bobby Jackson remained in his role as the Hornets' first man off the bench.

Paul averaged 19.5 points and 10.8 assists through the Hornets' first 10 games, during which New Orleans was 8-2.

NFL Hall-of-Famer Ringo dies

Jim Ringo, a Hall of Fame center who played 15 seasons for the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles, died Monday morning after a short illness.

Ringo became one of the league's best centers despite being undersized at just over 200 pounds.

Ringo, 75, played for the Eagles from 1964-67. He was voted to 10 Pro Bowls and was chosen for the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1960s. He started in a then-record 182 consecutive games from 1954-67.

Ringo coached the Buffalo Bills for two seasons.

Bucs' June arrested for DUI

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Cato June was arrested early Monday and charged with driving under the influence several hours after the team returned from a win in Atlanta.

June, 28, was stopped by police shortly before 3 a.m. because they said he was driving above the speed limit. He refused to take a breath test and was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail, where he remained for more than seven hours before being released on $500 bond.

The fifth-year pro spent the first four seasons of his career with the Indianapolis Colts.

Maxwell Award finalists named

Oregon senior quarterback Dennis Dixon, Arkansas junior running back Darren McFadden and Florida sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow are finalists for the Maxwell Award for the nation's best all-around player.

The Maxwell and eight other honors will be presented Dec. 6 at an awards ceremony televised by ESPN.

Cincinnati's Kevin Huber is one of the finalists for the Ray Guy Award for best punter.

Gay, Felix winners of Owens Award

Sprinters Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix were named the winners of the Jesse Owens Award as the outstanding U.S. track and field athletes of 2007.

It is the first time Gay has been given the honor and the second time for Felix.

Gay won the 100 and 200 meters at the world championships in Osaka, Japan, and was part of the victorious 400-meter relay team there.

Felix became the second woman in world championships history to win three golds.

Tyson gets one day in jail

Mike Tyson could have received more than four years in prison. He left the courtroom having to serve all of one day in an open-air jail.

The former heavyweight champion was sentenced Monday for cocaine possession and driving under the influence.

Tyson, 41, will serve his day in jail today for DUI. He received three years of probation for the cocaine charge and also will have to pay a fine, submit to drug testing and serve 360 hours of community service.

Numbers up at Keeneland sale

Sales improved 8.6 percent at this year's Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale over 2006 figures, officials said after the last session on Monday.

Last year's total of $313,843,800 was for 14 days, though, while this year the sale lasted 15 days and produced $340,877,200 in sales.

The average price of $100,821 was also up, 1.1 percent over $99,728 in 2006.
