comic actress sykes
Wanda Sykes has been added to the lineup of this year's Comedy Festival in Las Vegas, organized by HBO and AEG Live and scheduled to take place Nov. 14-17.
The comedian-actress joins previously announced stars Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen DeGeneres for the event.
In a conference call Tuesday, Rock said he's busy creating a fresh standup show for Vegas, which he called "a work in progress." Seinfeld said he feels the standup scene overall is "pretty good."
Both comics named Katt Williams along with Louis CK and Jim Norton as strong performers with possible further upside.
"We're hoping there's a future," Seinfeld said when asked about the state of comedy and whether comedians will have to switch into reality TV to survive. "I hope it's not (like we are) Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis here, and this is it."
On the topic of Michael Richards and his racist outburst at the Laugh Factory, Seinfeld said: "When I get up in the morning, I just assume that I'm on TV" given the abundance of cell phones and open access video Web sites. "I tuck my shirt in and try to behave accordingly."
Rock finds it amusing that folks feel the need to record everything they see. "I can't believe people don't trust their memories anymore," he quipped.
How appropriate that Ryan Seacrest, the pretty-boy host of television's most vacuous series, is hosting tonight's 59th annual Emmy Awards show.
"American Idol," arguably, doesn't contribute anything to the televised arts, but it's the highest-rated show on the tube. And ratings, we all know, are the biggest competition of all.
That said, "Idol" has a couple of nominations, including one for "Best Competition Reality Show." Which reality, one wonders, does this refer to?
