An 81-year-old Reservoir man died this morning after he was dragged out of his burning house by firefighters.
Paramedics spent more than 30 minutes trying to revive the man after he was retrieved unconscious from the house.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Laurie Crowther said firefighters had to contend with burning objects falling because the roof was full of "brick-a-brac''.
The Strathmerton Street house caught fire just after 2am and destroyed the weatherboard building.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established and the police arson squad will investigate today.

Man of the House is a 2005 comedy film starring Tommy Lee Jones about a Texas Ranger who has to protect a group of cheerleaders who witnessed a murder. Much of the movie was shot in Austin, Texas on the University of Texas campus and also at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Texas Governor Rick Perry has a cameo appearance in the film as himself. The movie is rated PG-13 for violence, sexual content, crude humor, and a drug reference. 78-year-old man is dead after fire swept through a house on Chicago's West Side. Fire officials say the blaze started before 3 a.m. in the 1.5 story brick building. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Fire Department Commander Will Knight says four people were in the home and three managed to escape.
Knight says the 78-year-old man was near the home's front door and trying to escape the fire when he was ''overcome by smoke.''
The man was pronounced dead at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. His name hasn't been released.
An autopsy has been scheduled.
