Posted by Billy under Videos , Film News

The new trailer for the Will Smith starring flick I Am Legend has been released. On top of the previously seen teaser, the new U.S. and international versions of the trailer can now be found streaming on the web.

The film follows Smith's character in a post-apocalyptic New York, fighting to stay alive amongst the nothingness of the city that's left and … who knows what else. You can view the new trailer in high definition right here. You can also stream them via Slashfilm.

Well, it's official: After watching the latest trailer for the Omega Man update, I Am Legend, I can safely say that I am now looking forward to this movie. Worstpreviews.com is hosting the new trailer for the sc-fi thriller about the last man on earth left to do battle with fellow survivors of a cannibalistic plague. WB has managed to improve their poster art for the film, so I guess they thought they would apply the same mentality to their trailers. The first trailer release back in June was much more focused on the drama angle of the film. This time, its all about the thrills -- and it definitely succeeds (although I probably could have done without the shots of Will Smith in full science-guy mode; lab coat and all).

Directed by Francis Lawrence, Smith stars as the survivor of a plague battling to find a cure before he is overrun by some pretty nasty fellow survivors. The script was written by Poseiden's Mark Protosevich, and Smith is joined by Salli Richardson and Alice Braga, but the trailer makes it very clear: this movie is all about Will Smith. Personally, I think he can carry it off, but that might just be me. So don't worry if this trailer has not sated your appetite for all things Legend. DC comics still has graphic novels on the way, and you can already play a MMO through Second Life courtesy of WB and The Electric Sheep. I Am Legend hits theaters on December 14th, 2007. I want to see it, and it looks good, but I think they really ruined a great story.

One of the things that made I Am Legend scary is that it took place in a rural setting. He had to drive all the way into town to do whatever he needed to do, and then drive all the way back before the infected came out.

Plus, he lived in a small HOUSE, which made it very difficult to protect himself, he had to board the whole place up and pray they wouldn't destroy the new defenses every night. With this being set in a modern city, I see no reason for him to fear, take up residence on the fifth floor of a high rise, board up the floors beneath, block off the staircases and you should be set, and you never have to worry about hearing them, which was one of the scariest parts of the story.

Everything that made the story scary was based around the fact that he lived in a small, rural town in the 50's, which meant none of the modern comforts (obviously, they didn't exist when the story was written) and none of the modern protections.

5. Someday I would like to see an actual movie of the book. Set in the 70's and everything. It could be like an alternate reality tale. I AM LEGEND is an unbelievably thrilling book. There is nothing creepier than the guy you use to work with becoming a vampire and coming to your house every night and asking you to come outside. Or for your undead wife to dig herself up and come home to you. Why not just make a movie directly from that?

[edit] Plot
The book takes place in the then-future of the years 1976-1979, and opens with the monotony and horror of the daily life of the protagonist, Robert Neville. Neville is apparently the only survivor of an apocalypse caused by a pandemic of a bacterium the symptoms of which are very similar to vampirism. Every day he also makes repairs to his house, boarding up windows, stringing and hanging garlic, and disposing of vampires' corpses on his lawn.

Neville's psychological disposition is a significant element in the novel, and his struggles with despair imbue the character with intensity and gravitas. The author emphasizes that he is an ordinary, flawed man trying to deal with an extraordinary catastrophe.

Much of the story is devoted to Neville's struggles to understand the plague that has transformed everyone he meets except for himself, and the novel details the progress of his discoveries. In this regard, the novel is almost unique in vampire fiction in that instead of asking the reader to accept a supernatural explanation for vampire phenomena, the author strives to offer scientific basis for such symptoms as aversion to garlic, craving of fresh blood, and resistance to bullets but vulnerability to stakes and sunlight. The aversion to mirrors and crosses (or, in the case of one vampire of Jewish origin, the Torah) is classified as psychological.

Eventually, Neville discovers that while he is the only person immune to the bacterium, he is not the only one still alive. Others who have been infected have discovered a means to hold the disease at bay. However, during the daylight hours, they appear to be fully evolved vampires. Thus, along with the vampires, he has been killing these still alive persons. He becomes a source of terror to the still living, since he can go around in daylight (which they can only do for a short length of time) and leaves their dead behind. These still living "vampires" capture Neville and reveal their nature to him, and how monstrous he appears to them. Just as vampires were regarded as legendary monsters that preyed on the vulnerable humans in their beds, Neville has become the last of a dead breed; a mythical figure that kills both vampires and the infected living while they are sleeping. He becomes a legend as the vampires once were, hence the title.

[edit] Film, TV or theatrical adaptations
I Am Legend has so far twice been adapted onto film, and a third adaptation, now set for release on December 14, 2007, has gone through several iterations.

[edit] The Last Man on Earth
Main article: The Last Man on Earth (1964 film)
In 1964, Vincent Price starred as Dr. Robert Morgan (rather than "Neville") in The Last Man on Earth. (An Italian production, the original title was L'Ultimo Uomo Della Terra). Matheson wrote the screenplay for this adaptation, but later rewrites were so changed that he did not wish his name to appear in the credits. As a result, Matheson is credited under the pseudonym "Logan Swanson".

[edit] The Omega Man
Main article: The Omega Man
In 1971 a far different version appeared as The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston and Anthony Zerbe. Matheson had no influence on the screenplay for this film; it deviates from the novel's story in several ways, removing the vampirical elements, except for the creatures' extreme photosensitivity.

[edit] I Am Legend
Main article: I Am Legend (film)
A Ridley Scott adaptation was scheduled for production in the late 1990s, but fell through due to an inflating budget. The film was to star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Then director Rob Bowman took a crack at a smaller budget version with a rewrite from John Logan. Will Smith will now star in the film directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine). Filming took place in New York City, and the film is scheduled to be released on December 14, 2007.
